Hello! Welcome to my little corner of the internet –
My name is Rissa Swan & I’m the Founder of The Alt-Mom Blog. I'm a mom, certified hairstylist, and (future) wife who has struggled with mental health issues throughout my life. I started this blog as an outlet for my passion for helping women feel empowered and inspired by the choices they make every day! Whether it's about their bodies, relationships, careers—whatever. As a woman who's been through a lot with their own mental health, I want to be able to help others feel stronger and more confident in their own lives. This is my passion project: a place for women, mothers, and those struggling with mental health to find inspiration, support, and a community that loves them just as they are! I believe in the power of community and the importance of self-care.
I have struggled with my mental health and well being for most of my life. As a result, I've found myself in many different places… from doctors offices to therapy sessions to group meetings/counselling—and it has been hard to find an effective way to manage my own issues while coming into adulthood and motherhood. But it is NOT impossible! That's why I created this space—to share the tools and resources that have helped me through those dark days into the brighter ones where life feels full of possibility again.
We're “alt-moms” because we don't fit into the boxes society tries to place us in, we don't believe in rigid labels. It's possible to be a great mom without having a strict schedule or ridiculously high expectations for yourself or your family. I believe that women are often told that they need to be perfect or that they shouldn't be mothers because it's too hard or "too much" for them.
I hope my blog will help empower women and inspire them with stories about how I've overcome obstacles and how you can do it too! I hope this space will bring you joy, laughter, and inspiration—just like it has brought me.
It’s been an incredible journey so far and I hope you'll join me along the way!

Much love,
Rissa Swan
